The salary for an accountant all depends on what type of accountant you are. In May of 2004, these were the annual salaries for the largest numbers of accountants and auditors:

• Federal executive branch and USPS                     $56,900
• Accounting, tax preparation, bookeeping & payroll    53,870
• Management of companies and enterprises              52,260
• Local government                                               47,440
• State government                                              43,400

There is currently a shortage in accountants. That means there are plenty of positions available. So if you have the qualifications, there's a sure path that you will get that position. Since firms are becoming more intersted in competing, the frims are becoming more complicated. I think that the need for accountants will increase.
